Why we built PawAddress: the gap we saw in Hyderabad's pet care market

Every pet parent in Hyderabad has the same problem. You're going out of town, you need someone trustworthy, and you have no idea where to start. This is why we built PawAddress.

Three years ago, I watched a friend go through something that no pet parent should have to experience.

She was traveling for work — a last-minute trip to Bengaluru. Her Labrador, Max, needed boarding for five days. She called six people she found through Instagram. Two didn't respond. Two were full. One asked for a cash advance with no documentation. The sixth was a friend-of-a-friend who seemed fine — until Max came home with an unexplained injury and a provider who stopped answering the phone.

No accountability. No recourse. No way to know in advance who was actually safe.

This is not a rare story. Ask any pet parent in Hyderabad and you'll hear some version of it.

The problem isn't supply — it's trust

Hyderabad has hundreds of people offering pet boarding, grooming, walking, and sitting. Many of them are genuinely excellent at what they do. The problem isn't that there aren't enough providers. The problem is that there's no reliable way to tell the good ones from the bad ones before you hand over your pet.

Google reviews can be faked. Instagram DMs leave no paper trail. WhatsApp groups rely entirely on word-of-mouth. And if something goes wrong, you're on your own.

The same trust infrastructure that makes you comfortable booking a hotel room, hiring a plumber through Urban Company, or ordering medication from PharmEasy — it simply doesn't exist for pet care.

Why existing platforms didn't solve it

International platforms like Rover and Wag built something close to the right model, but they're not in India. The platforms that do exist in India are predominantly listing directories — they tell you who's available, but they don't verify credentials, they don't handle payments, they don't take responsibility if something goes wrong, and they don't give you any recourse if a provider is a no-show.

We knew the solution wasn't another directory. It had to be a marketplace with actual accountability built in.

What we built

PawAddress is built on three principles:

1. Verification first. Every provider on PawAddress goes through identity verification (government ID + PAN). Providers offering boarding and overnight services go through additional credential checks. Our Verified Badge isn't a participation trophy — it means we've actually verified who they are.

2. Proof at every step. We built a QR code-based handoff system so every drop-off and pickup is documented. For boarding, daily photo updates give pet parents visibility into how their pet is doing. If a dispute arises, there's a paper trail — not just "their word vs mine."

3. Real recourse. When something goes wrong, we have a documented P0 protocol (pet injury/safety incidents get escalated within 1 hour). When a provider cancels at the last minute, the pet parent gets a full refund — including the convenience fee. We take provider accountability seriously because a platform is only as trustworthy as what happens when things go wrong.

Why Hyderabad first

We're building for Hyderabad first because it's a city we know and where we can build trust in the market with real relationships, not just an algorithm. Hyderabad has one of the fastest-growing pet parent communities in India — more apartment buildings are becoming pet-friendly, more millennials are adopting dogs and cats, and more people are traveling for work. The demand is real and growing.

But more than that: local trust needs local investment. You can't build a trusted pet care marketplace from a distance. We're here, our providers are here, our pet parents are here.
